Several parts of the concrete frame in the main engine room building at the Limnos Island power plant showed significant damage. In particular, the plaster on the corner columns and some peripheral beams had almost completely flaked off, with the underlying concrete suffering from extensive carbonation. Additionally, many steel rods had severely corroded, significantly compromising the structural integrity of the frame.
The corroded reinforcement rebars were treated with chemical corrosion inhibitors, and those that were beyond repair were replaced with new ones. The concrete geometry was restored using high-quality repair cement mortars, followed by the application of high-durability resin plaster. Finally, the restored surfaces were repainted with high-quality silicone-acrylic paint.
